Back to school doesn’t just mean sparkling new pen cases and uniforms – for many of us it also often means the return of children’s sniffles and tummy bugs. So I thought I’d give you a few tips to help boost the whole family’s immunity:
- A healthy tummy means a healthier immune system, so load up on organic plain live yogurt in the morning, and/or take a good quality probiotic at least 4-5 times a week. (Ask the health food store for advice on the right dosage for your child).
- Reduce your children’s sugar consumption by giving them regular little snacks with a little protein in each: houmous with cut up vegetables and crackers, nuts and seeds (check for allergies first!), pieces of cooked chicken, oily fish sandwiches, almond or cashew nut butters on crackers or apples (my personal favourite!), guacamole, etc.
- Feed their brains and growing bodies lots of good omega 3 fats: introduce oily fish at least twice a week (fresh or tinned) – salmon, mackerel, trout, sardines, tuna, herring; add ground seeds to their food, or have them snack on sunflower and pumpkin seeds, give them eggs for breakfast and at least one serving of green leafy vegetables every day.
- As usual, make sure they are fully hydrated and reward them (not with sweets!) for finishing their water bottles at school.
