A study published in the Telegraph a few years ago revealed that two thirds of Britons did not eat breakfast and another recent survey found that one in 7 primary school children were going to school without breakfast. Though economics are a contributing factor to these startling figures, it is (thankfully) not the main reason why so many are missing the most important meal of the day. So if you still don’t know why you should get out of bed 20 minutes earlier to have a little something before heading off to work or school, here are a few reasons why you should ‘break your fast’ every day:
- Children and teenagers who eat breakfast are less likely to become obese and develop diseases such as type 2 diabetes or heart disease in later life. They also perform far better in school and in IQ tests.
- Adults who skip breakfast have a 20% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and a 27% higher chance of suffering from heart disease.
Low blood sugar levels, naturally occurring after many hours without food and drink, will prevent your brain from functioning normally. You will also be far more susceptible to snacking on sugar or high carbohydrate foods throughout the day, thus contributing to weight gain, low energy and generally low moods.
